P2P File sharing is more alive than ever. One can also see that in the load of P2P file sharing software available. New titles are released more frequent than old ones dissapear. From the old outdated players as Bearshare and Kazaa to new and promissing developments as Zultrax P2P, here is an overview of the P2P file sharing clients I know. We have made this overview for internal use. But hey, feel free to check out the others, though be carefull what you install, and then, come back to us.

Zultrax P2P
|
My favorite by far. Partly because I am one of the programmers of it but mostly because it is just good. Zultrax P2P brings a clean and easy no-nonsense user interface. There is not a lot of toys and useless goodies but you do get the information you need, easy maneuvring. You can define queries as simple and advanced as you wish. Fully based on the concept of
swarming
it provides modern technology that makes speady downloads possible.

Ares Galaxy
|
Number second for me would be either Ares Galaxy of Limewire. Ares wins on points, the interface is easy and it downloads at reasonable speed. Ares is open source software which means that it gives no privacy protection. For those who like it, Ares Galaxy also has a chat function. The chat is done worse than the file sharing but perhaps you will find it OK.

Limewire
|
Limewire is a pure Gnutella client. Gnutella is the oldest P2P network around and just had had its days. Gnutella comes with many problems and wasn't designed for large-scale fast P2P downloads. Still Limewire comes with a very complete and very stable program. No privacy protection, all is open, open network, open source, one can even browse others files. Downloading goes a bit slow, you can be queued for ages. Being one of the largest file sharing clients around Limewire has the resources to put out a nice piece of software. And they did.
The fully open source Limewire allows spin-offs, other clients based on the same program code as LimeWire itself. The most well known spin-offs are
frostwire
and
freewire
. There isn't much difference between the three. I would stick with the original but that is a matter of taste.

XoloX
|
Promoting its version of May 20th, 2004 on its site as new, it is safe to say that Xolox is gone. Too bad. Around 2002 for a short while most likely the best file sharing client around. They stopped, came back and are now not moving any more. You can still download the software. Perhaps it is something for if you are in a nostalgic mood. I didn't check out with Xolox for years so I have now idea if it is still working.

Morpheus
|
Personally I always liked Morpheus. Perpahs that is because I know how to get rid of the annoying adware of this program. The interface looks great and downloading goes well (most of the time) but on my computer there is a no adware/ no spyware rule. Think of the software what you want. Screamcast Networks, the company behind Morpheus deserves a big round of applause anyway. They are the ones sued in court and they are the ones explaining the world filesharing is not about downloading copyrighted music but about freedom of speech.

iMesh
|
I didn't have a look at iMesh for a long time. As a file sharing network it exists already a long time, I read at the iMesh website that now they are a community offering something that the call "100% legal P2P". All I can tell is that it is still a rather big player and I ain't hearing much bad about it. Perhaps it is also time for me to have a renewed look at iMesh. What would be more legal about them than about us?

eMule
|
From the family of eMule's and eDonkey's there is eMule. eMule is good and clean software. I had difficulties with it but it could very well be that that is my fault.

Shareaza
|
Together with Limewire one of the most active open source file sharing projects. Shareaza has a nice user interface. For me, Shareaza is goodlooking and futher more an average file sharing client. Not above average good, not bad. Normal.
